Abstract

The study conducted usability testing on a prototype medical library website for federal universities in Nigeria with a focus on time on task and task success rate. The study sought to achieve 2 objectives, while 2 research questions were formulated and answered. A mixed-research methodology was adopted for this study. The prototype was designed using user-centred approach with appropriate web development tools like HTML, CSS, and PHP. The Prototype Medical Library Website Usability and User Experience Testing Worksheet was used to record users’ performance for time on task and task success rate. A total of 30 participants from six medical libraries situated within six federal-government owned teaching Hospitals comprising Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, University College Hospital, Ibadan, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu and University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City were studied. The data collected were analysed using mean, standard deviation, frequency counts and percentages while data presentation was done using Tables, Graphs and Bar Charts. The study found that the average mean time on task of the prototype medical library website is 16.00s, indicating fast task completion time across tasks while the average task success rate across tasks is 90.93% indicating a high task success rate. The study concluded that the prototype medical library website for federal universities in Nigeria is showed high level of efficiency and effectiveness. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that prototype medical library website for federal universities in Nigeria should be kept current, accurate, and relevant by the medical library website administrator so that the website can remain useful to users and assist in making task completion faster and maintaining a high task success rate.

Utilization of Scholarly Communication Channels for Research Outputs by Environmental Science Lecturers in Higher Education Institutions in Ugandan.

The study investigated the utilization of scholarly communication channels for research by environmental science lecturers in Ugandan universities. 6 universities comprising of 3 public universities namely: Makereer, Kabale and Kyambogo and 3 private universities namely: Kampala, Kampala International, and Nkumba universities. Population was 152 lecturers from both universities, 87 from public and 65 lecturers from private. Descriptive survey design was adopted. The instrument used for data collection was structured questionnaire. The researchers distributed 152 copies of the questionnaire, 116 copies were retrieved and found useable, having a response rate of 76.03%. Data analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings revealed that the formal means of scholarly communication channels available were peer-reviewed, authored research work and open sources. Top most productive channel used for research by lecturers were academic journals, conference presentations and seminars, while, top areas covered in environmental science research by lecturers were climate change, global warming, pollution environmental degradation, biochar, agriculture and food supplies, environmental engineering and technology. Based on the findings the study recommended among others: creation of low-cost open access channels within the universities that can provide direct alternatives to highpriced commercial titles and outlets outside; that more research fund and grants should be established on top most research areas in environmental issues and problems.

Awareness and Utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Driven Information Retrieval Tools By Researchers in Academic Libraries In Nigeria

This study examines the awareness and utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven information retrieval tools by researchers in academic libraries in Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 120 respondents, including academic researchers, librarians, and postgraduate students across selected federal universities. A structured questionnaire was employed to assess awareness levels, extent of utilization, benefits, and challenges associated with AI-driven retrieval tools. Findings revealed a high level of awareness, with Google Scholar AI-enhanced search and ChatGPT being the most recognized tools, while Connected Papers had the lowest awareness. However, actual utilization of these tools remained low despite the high awareness, with researchers favoring more familiar tools. The study identified several benefits of AI tools, including 24/7 availability, improved accuracy and relevance, enhanced citation management, and automated literature reviews. However, challenges such as limited awareness, resistance to change, poor internet connectivity, high costs, and lack of technical expertise hinder adoption and utilization.

Influence of Information and Communication Technology Competence (ICT) on Job Performance of Library Staff in University Libraries in Plateau State, Nigeria

The study investigated the influence of information and communication technology competence on job performance in university libraries in Plateau State, Nigeria. The study has four objectives, three research questions, and one hypothesis. The study adopted a quantitative research design. The population of the study was 122 library staff from the three university libraries in Plateau State, Nigeria. The instrument for data collection was a self-designed questionnaire. A total of 122 copies of the questionnaire were administered out of which 110 copies were retrieved and found usable, giving a response rate of 90.2%. Data collected were analysed and presented using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that the extent of the job performance of the library staff in the university libraries in Plateau State, Nigeria was high with an average weighted mean of 3.21. The level of the information and communication technology competence of the library staff in university libraries was high with an average weighted mean of 3.00. There is a significant influence of information and communication technology competence on the job performance of library staff in the universities in Plateau State, Nigeria, with the standardized Beta value is 0.676, which shows that ICT competence has 67.6% effect on staff job performance and P-value is 0.000 which is less 0.05 level of significance. The study concludes that when library staff have the requisite skills it enhances the job performance of both professional and non-professional library staff. The study recommends that Management of university libraries in Plateau State should concentrate on training library staff on computer hardware, digitisation skills, networking skills and library software installation.
